We assessed the service against ‘right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted.
Charnwood House demonstrated outstanding practice across all elements of right care, right support and right culture. People benefited from a highly inclusive, therapeutic and empowering environment where independence, aspiration and safety were balanced exceptionally well. Care was compassionate, skilful and deeply personalised. Staff had an excellent understanding of people’s backgrounds, communication needs and long‑term goals. This knowledge was embedded into everyday practice, allowing people to participate in truly meaningful activities and work progressively toward their aspirations.
Where people had restrictions in place, staff implemented these safely and with exceptional sensitivity. Restrictions were never static; they were continually reviewed to explore whether they could be reduced, adapted or modified in line with the person’s emotional development, risk levels or long‑term goals. Staff championed each person’s potential, ensuring safety measures did not limit opportunity or independence unnecessarily. This balanced approach allowed people to progress safely while maintaining dignity and control.
People were supported to build confidence, gain new experiences and develop healthy, trusting relationships, both within the home and in the community. Staff recognised the importance of social connection and worked proactively to reduce isolation. They supported people to form positive relationships in safe, structured ways, especially when individuals had experienced previous difficulties or anxieties around relationships.
Medicines were administered safely, and staff had the training, insight and confidence to respond to people’s changing needs. The home’s environment was personalised and adapted in ways that supported independence, sensory comfort and wellbeing. Staff were recruited safely, with appropriate checks and training to ensure they could meet people’s complex needs consistently and effectively.
The culture of the service was nurturing, aspirational and empowering. Staff consistently demonstrated a belief in people’s potential and worked with creativity and dedication to ensure each person had choice and control over their daily life and future decisions
