This unannounced assessment assessed 15 quality statements across Safe and Well Led only. This was the first assessment of Earlsdon Lodge Care Home under the new provider, Earlsdon Care Ltd which was registered with the Care Quality Commission on 21 December 2022. This assessment was completed due to information of concern received about the management of risk related to people's health and wellbeing, and good governance. This unannounced assessment examined those risks.
Staff had access to policies and procedures to support them in their role and ensure they worked in accordance with the providers expectations. Sometimes records were not sufficiently clear to show they had always been followed.
Risks associated with people’s needs and their home environment were assessed, and relatives felt their family members were safe. Staff had access to ongoing training and support to help them meet people’s needs safely. Sometimes staffing arrangements were not effective in ensuring risks were managed safely and consistently. Some areas of the home required improved cleaning to help prevent the risk of infection.
Managers made sure recruitment checks were undertaken on all staff to ensure only those individuals that were deemed suitable and fit would be employed to support people at the service.
The provider had audit systems and processes in place to help ensure staff followed safe policies and procedures. Health and safety checks were undertaken to assist in ongoing monitoring. Some records were not sufficiently detailed or accurate which meant it was not clear safe and consistent care and support was always provided.

Safe
Good
People were involved in making decisions about how they wished to be supported to help keep them safe. Managers assessed and reviewed safety risks to people, and staff received relevant training to help meet the range of people’s needs at the service safely. People received their medicines; however, records did not always show medicines had been managed appropriately. Staff completed ongoing training to aide continuous learning and improve their working practice. Managers completed recruitment checks on all staff to ensure that were deemed safe and suitable to support people at the service. People felt safe at the home, however there was not always a staff presence in communal areas of the home, to help maintain peoples safety. The home was regularly cleaned although some areas needed additional cleaning. Systems were in place to support staff in protecting people from the risk of the spread of infection.

Well-led
Good
There were clear governance and management arrangements to support the effective management of the home. Staff felt supported and understood their role and responsibilities. The providers policies and procedures addressed equality and diversity to ensure services were fair and accessible to everyone. The provider’s vision and values had been shared with staff through regular meetings. These meetings addressed risks, learning, and any changes in practice needed to ensure the home ran effectively. The provider had a range of quality monitoring systems and processes to help support ongoing improvements to the service. However, these had not identified some of the issues we had found needing improvement. People, and relatives involved in people’s care told us they were not always aware of meetings to discuss the service. Notifications such as accidents and incidents were consistently submitted to external organisations as required. There were arrangements to ensure the confidentiality of records was maintained.
