The home specialises in the care of people who have a brain injury or complex neurological health care needs. The home is also registered to support people who have a learning disability.

During our visits we were able to carry out observations in communal areas and speak with people, staff and visitors. We undertook this unannounced responsive assessment due to concerns raised about the service in relation to medicine management, the rapid turnover in managers and staff skills.

At our last inspection the service was rated good, at this assessment the service has remained good.

We have assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted. The service is larger than current best practice recommendations,

but the principles and values of Registering the Right Support and other best practice guidance were carefully considered by the provider. These ensure that people who use the service can live as full a life as possible and achieve the best possible outcomes that include control, choice, and independence.

People were supported to be safe and were supported with the risks they faced. There were enough staff with the right skills, qualifications and experience. Staff were supported and had received mandatory and specialist training to support people’s needs.

Improvements were implemented to ensure medicines were managed safely, and people received their medicines as prescribed.

There were enough staff on duty with the skills required to meet people’s needs. Staff were safely recruited and received an induction and ongoing training to make sure their skills were appropriate and up to date.

After numerous management changes at Wey House Nursing home, we found there was good leadership and management at the home. Communication was improving with people, relatives and staff. Staff were more confident in the management of the home and were working with them to implement changes.

The provider had an effective governance process to ensure continuous improvement.Audits undertaken were effective in identifying and addressing areas for improvement. The provider had an effective system to investigate and learn from incidents and concerns. The team worked with people using the service, those close to them, and other professionals.

The registered manager, clinical lead and operations manager worked well together, and each had their roles and responsibilities. They were keen to provide the best possible service to people. They were working with staff to improve the culture at the home. Learning was shared to improve the service and help mitigate future risks.

People and relatives spoke positively about the new management team, who promoted a positive, caring culture. However, they expressed caution as there had been a lot of changes in the management team over the past few years.
