What inspectors found

From the Care Quality Commission's assessment published 2 May 2024 (assessment visit 15 February 2024). Quoted under the Open Government Licence.

Mountfield House Care Home is a residential care home providing accommodation for people who require personal care. The service provides support to people with sensory impairments, physical disabilities, mental health and older people some of who live with dementia. We carried out an assessment beginning 15 February 2024 with a site visit taking place on 28 February 2024. The last rating for the service was requires improvement (published 22 September 2022), at this inspection we found improvements had been made to risk management and some improvements to governance. However, improvements were needed in the oversight of Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) applications. People were safe living at the service. There were enough staff to meet people's needs safely. Staff understood how to minimise risks to peoples safety and raise concerns if things were wrong and where needed people were referred to other agencies.

  1. Safe

    Good

Improvements had been made to how the provider worked to keep people safe. People were protected from avoidable harm with staff trained to recognise the signs of abuse. Risks to people were assessed and plans put in place to reduce them. Where people needed support from other health professionals these were done. There was enough staff to meet people's needs when they needed it and there had been improvements to the building with regular checks carried out on the maintenance of the building equipment.

  2. Caring

    Good

People were able to make choices for themselves. The registered manager had systems in place to ensure staff observed peoples choices. Independence was encouraged and people received visitors to the service and had support to engage in activities they enjoyed. People were supported to maintain their independence and understood their rights which were observed by staff.

  3. Responsive

    Good

People were supported to have their needs and preferences met by staff who understood how to support them. Staff understood peoples communication needs and adjusted their approach to meet those needs. Staff were respectful of peoples wishes and preferences and could describe how this guided them in providing support to people.

  4. Well-led

    No rating

Governance and oversight systems had improved since the last inspection, however more improvements were needed to some oversight systems. There was no oversight of DoLS applications to ensure the outcome was documented in people's care records and appropriate notifications were completed. However the provider had made improvements to other areas of the governance and oversight arrangements in the service. Systems were in place to check on the quality of the service people received, identify areas for improvement and ensure these were completed. Audits were in place to monitor care plans, check on the environment and equipment in the service which were ensuring actions were taken to make improvements.
