What inspectors found
From the Care Quality Commission's assessment published 14 March 2025 (assessment visit 2 December 2024). Quoted under the Open Government Licence.
Wensley House Residential Home is a residential care home providing personal care and accommodation for up to 48 people aged 65 and over, including people living with dementia. At this inspection there were 36 people living at the service. This assessment commenced on 10 December 2024 which was unannounced and concluded on 20 January 2025. We further met with the provider and registered manager on 18 December 2024 and 15 January 2025. These additional meetings were held to receive assurance and evidence of action around some of our assessment findings. We spoke with three people who use the service and 8 of their relatives and further received feedback from 8 staff members and three professionals who work with Wensley House. We reviewed care records for 5 people, and records relating to care and treatment, consent, accidents and incidents, medicines, governance, management and quality monitoring, staff recruitment, and training. The service was last inspected on 17 July 2019 and rated requires improvement. This assessment was prompted due to an incident that occurred within the service and the length of time since the previous rating. At this assessment we found overall that people received a good standard of care, but that management systems were not operated effectively. Processes for monitoring the quality of care provided were not operated effectively. This was a breach of regulation 17 (Good governance). However we found the management team to be open, honest and proactive about actions already taken and how they intended to continue to improve

Safe
Good
There were enough staff on each shift to keep people safe and meet their needs. Staff had been trained although further specific training in areas such as dementia was required to ensure staff met people’s individual needs. There was evidence that learning was taken from individual incidents and adverse events, accidents and incidents were investigated. Staff knew how to recognise and report abuse or poor practice. Risks to people's safety and wellbeing had been assessed and mitigated. People lived in a safe, clean environment and received their medicines in a safe way and as prescribed. There were systems in place to ensure people were protected against the risk of infection.
-
Effective
No rating
People’s needs were assessed before they moved into the home. People’s care needs were met through positive outcomes that were consistently achieved and met people’s expectations. People and relatives commented on the positive impact they had. All staff understood how to support people and the importance of building relationships. People were supported by a staff team who sought consent and respected those decisions when delivering person-centred care. Staff had received training to recognise when a person may lack capacity, however some staff did not demonstrate their awareness of this to us.
-
Responsive
No rating
Managers and staff understand the health and care needs of people, so care is joined-up, flexible and supports choice and continuity. Staff assessed people’s communication needs and adapted their approach to meet those needs. People were treated in a person-centred way. The ethos of people first care was evident throughout our discussions and observations. Staff interactions were warm, friendly and affectionate.
-
Well-led
No rating
Systems do not facilitate discussions about culture, service improvement or innovation. Staff told us they felt valued by the registered manager and provider, however neither had kept their knowledge up to date around their regulatory responsibilities. The registered manager acknowledged that audits and checks were not fully in place or embedded within the governance framework.
