Ponsandane is a 'care home' that provides care and support to older people some of whom may be living with dementia. People in care homes receive accommodation and nursing or personal care as single package under one contractual agreement. The service accommodates up to 58 people in one adapted building. On the day of the inspection 44 people living at the home.

We carried out our unannounced on-site assessment on 8 February 2024, off site assessment activity started on 17 January 2024 and ended on 15 February 2024.
We looked at 7 quality statements; Safeguarding; Involving people to manage risks; Safe and effective staffing; Assessing needs; Independence, choice and control; Equity in experiences and outcomes; and Learning, improvement and innovation.
At our last inspection the service was rated good. At this assessment the service remains good.

Good
The service was safe. Staff and managers knew how to protect people from harm and abuse. Risks had been identified, appropriately mitigated and staff understood how to support people safely.
The service had sufficient numbers of experienced and skilled staff and all planned care shifts had been provided. The service had been successful in recruiting new staff and all necessary pre employment check had bene completed.

There were appropriate systems in place to identify and assess people’s needs before they moved into Ponsandane.

People’s independence was valued and staff respected people’s decisions.

Good
People were treated fairly and able to access a range of activities and entertainments if they wished.
People were able to choose what they wanted at meals times and were complimentary of the food provided.

Good
Staff were complimentary of the service’s leadership and records showed learning had been identified from incidents that occurred.
Audits were designed to drive improvements and the service engaged positively with the local community.
