What inspectors found

From the Care Quality Commission's assessment published 1 May 2024 (assessment visit 1 February 2024). Quoted under the Open Government Licence.

Kingsland House is a nursing home catering for people with physical illness or dementia. We carried out an assessment of this service between 14 February and 19 March 2024. Our assessment of the service included an unannounced visit to the home on 14 February 2024. We looked at the quality statements safe and effective staffing, kindness, compassion and dignity, responding to people’s immediate needs and governance, management and sustainability. While there were some areas for improvement, overall we found the areas we assessed to be good. The home was divided into areas based on people’s needs, but staff were able to work across the whole home. There were usually enough staff to keep people safe at Kingsland House and the home was clean. Some staff had gaps in their knowledge about their responsibilities. Most staff treated people with dignity and respect. However people who lived on Memory Lane were not always treated with compassion and dignity. The service did not have a registered manager at the time of our visit but there were senior staff managing the home, including the area manager and a deputy manager, and the provider was actively seeking a manager.

  1. Safe

    Good

There were adequate numbers of trained staff on site to keep people safe. We saw staff supporting people during the inspection. People and staff we spoke to told us staffing levels were safe. We received mixed feedback about staffing levels at the home before the inspection. Some relatives had complained to CQC that staffing levels were low. However people we spoke to on the day of the inspection told us there were enough staff to look after them safely.

  2. Caring

    Good

We saw people being cared for by staff who were task focused and did not always support people with compassion or dignity. People we could speak to told us staff were kind. There had been staff changes at the home and the manager told us they were working on improving the culture. Staff told us they were happy and proud to work at the home. Staff told us how they supported people and people said “Staff are really lovely and helpful.”

  3. Well-led

    Good

There had been changes at the home including the loss of a manager. A new manager was being sought and in the meantime the operations manager was managing the day to day running of the home with the support of a deputy manager. Staff told us the change was a positive one with a stronger leadership style and a manager who demanded good care for people. Relatives told us they thought the new deputy was an asset to the home. The manager explained the audits that were carried out to monitor the care provided. People and relatives were able to feedback about care via frequent meetings, and by surveys. The manager also told us she had an open door policy so people could talk to her at any time and relatives confirmed this.
