We inspected this service due to the length of time since our last inspection where the service was rated Requires Improvement.
The provider was in breach of regulations 12 and 17 regarding safe care and treatment and good governance.
Records relating to safe management of people’s medication were not well maintained. This included records relating to thickened fluids, PEG (Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy) feeds and both PRN and time critical medicines. Staff competency assessments had not always been completed.
Not all risks were managed effectively. We observed some bedroom doors were held open by inappropriate means which would prevent them from closing in the event of a fire. Some people’s pressure relieving mattresses were not on the correct settings meaning there was a risk people’s skin integrity could be compromised. People’s care plans lacked information about skin integrity to ensure staff knew how to deliver their care safely.
Mental Capacity Act (MCA) assessments were not always completed where restrictions were in place to demonstrate decisions were taken in people’s best interests, such as the use of sensor mats and bedrails in people’s bedrooms.
Care plans lacked important information about people’s needs. Accurate records about the care people received were not always maintained. Robust quality assurance processes were not in place to ensure any shortfalls were identified and acted upon in a timely way.
People told us they felt safe living at the home. Accidents and incidents were monitored, with analysis completed to promote any future learning. Safe recruitment procedures were in place with relevant pre-employment checks carried out.
Initial assessments were undertaken when people first moved into the home. People were involved in the care they received and their care plan. Everybody we spoke with told us they were happy with the care provided.
The feedback we received was that the service was well-led and that the new home manager was making visible changes. Staff said they enjoyed their roles and working at the home.
