Blossomfield Rose is a care home with nursing for up to 80 older people some of whom have a diagnosis of dementia. People in care homes receive accommodation and nursing or personal care as a single package under one contractual agreement. CQC regulates both the premises, and the care provided, and both were looked at during this assessment. At the time of our assessment 74 people were living at the service.
During the assessment, we spoke with people who received care from the service, their relatives and healthcare professionals who worked in partnership with the service. We also spoke with staff, including the Registered Manager, Nominated Individual, senior care staff and care workers.
Systems were in place to help protect people from the risk of harm. People’s needs, care requirements and risks to their health and wellbeing were assessed, regularly reviewed and managed through appropriate control measures to help keep them safe.
There were effective systems in place to safely recruit staff, and staff received appropriate training and support to carry out their roles. Staff demonstrated the skills, knowledge and experience needed to meet people’s individual needs and worked collaboratively with healthcare professionals, relatives and other stakeholders to ensure people received coordinated and effective support. Staff followed best practice guidance, communicated well and supported people to achieve positive health and wellbeing outcomes.
People were cared for by a compassionate staff team who knew them well, respected their preferences and delivered care in a person-centred, flexible and responsive way. People and their relatives were actively involved in planning and reviewing care, and staff adapted their approach to meet individual needs while promoting equality, inclusion, choice and independence. During the inspection, we observed positive interactions between people using the service and staff across all areas, including care, catering and housekeeping teams. People also had access to a wide range of activities and facilities that supported their wellbeing and independence.
The environment was clean, well maintained and welcoming. People’s nutritional and healthcare needs were well managed, and support was provided in a way that encouraged involvement, informed decision-making and positive outcomes.
The service was well led, with clear values and a positive culture embedded throughout daily practice. The management team were approachable, knowledgeable and committed to continuous improvement. Governance and quality assurance systems were being further developed to help ensure people consistently received safe, effective and high-quality care.
However, some improvements were needed to ensure medicines were always stored safely. In addition, decision-specific mental capacity assessments were not always completed where required. The provider responded to our feedback during the inspection and took prompt action to address the issues identified.
