What inspectors found

From the Care Quality Commission's assessment published 2 January 2025 (assessment visit 17 September 2024). Quoted under the Open Government Licence.

This assessment took place between 15 October 2024 and 29 October 2024. We carried out this assessment to review progress made since our last assessment when we identified breaches of regulations. Carrick is a care home for people with a learning disability and autistic people. At the time of the assessment 4 people were living at Carrick. We expect health and social care providers to guarantee people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices and independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted. ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ is the guidance CQC follows to make assessments and judgements about services supporting people with a learning disability and autistic people and providers must have regard to it. We found improvements had been made. However, improvements to supporting people to identify and meet their goals were needed. Improvements had been made to the environment. However, there remained areas where further work was needed. Processes to assess people’s compatibility before someone moved into Carrick were not robust and did not minimise the risks associated with people’s needs negatively impacting on each other. There were no formal systems for gathering and recording people’s views. Following our visit the registered manager provided further information about how improvements would be made in these areas.

  1. Safe

    Good

People were supported by a stable staff team that had a good knowledge of their needs. Training was regularly updated and competency checks completed. When incidents occurred, staff had an opportunity to debrief and learn from the experience. Risks were well managed including risks associated with medicines. Staff knew how to raise safeguarding concerns. Relatives had no concerns about people’s safety. When new people moved into the service the registered manager completed a needs assessment based on the information available. There had been no opportunity for people to be involved or consulted in the process.

  2. Effective

    Good

Care plans were up to date and gave a good overview of people’s individual needs. Information included advice and guidance from the organisations Positive Behaviour Support team and external professionals. Staff sought consent before providing care and any restrictive practices were proportionate and the least restrictive option.

  3. Caring

    Good

Staff valued people and were kind and caring in their approach. There was a culture of supporting people to be independent and live meaningful lives in the way they chose. People’s individual needs were respected, including their preferred communication styles.

  4. Responsive

    Good

People were able to take part in a range of activities according to their preferences. Staff were working to identify goals for people. There was limited information on how these goals had been identified or how they would be achieved. There was a complaints policy and procedures. This was available to people in an easy read format. There was no formal system for gathering people’s views. However, staff knew people well and would highlight any concerns they had about their well-being with managers.

  5. Well-led

    Good

Significant improvements had been made since our last on-site assessment. This had directly affected people’s experience of living at Carrick. Improvements to the culture of the service meant people were valued and their individuality was respected. Audits and reviews of the service were used to drive improvements where necessary. Staff told us they were well supported and leaders were proactive and had a good understanding of the day to day running of the service.
