What inspectors found
From the Care Quality Commission's assessment published 18 November 2025 (assessment visit 23 September 2025). Quoted under the Open Government Licence.
St George’s Nursing Home (Oldham) is a care home which provides personal and nursing care for up to 77 people. The home supports young and older people with varying needs including a diagnosis of dementia, an acquired brain injury and people with mental health needs. We assessed all quality statements under the five key questions of safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led. We completed an onsite assessment at St Georges Nursing Home on 29 September and 3 October 2025 and continued to collect evidence and feedback after this.
Staff demonstrated a strong commitment to safeguarding, with annual training in place to ensure people were kept safe from harm. There was clear evidence of learning from incidents, supported by regular audits completed by the leadership team. Recruitment processes were generally safe, though a couple of areas for improvement were identified to enhance the quality and completeness of documentation.
Staffing levels were appropriate, as shown in rotas and observations, and all necessary safety checks were in place. Medicines were mostly handled safely, and where issues were identified, appropriate actions were taken. The home was generally clean and tidy, with staff using personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintaining hygiene.
There was strong partnership working with other services. New admissions were assessed with the lead nurse present to ensure their needs could be met. While feedback on involvement in care planning was mixed, the home had already identified ways to improve this and ensure activities reflected peoples’ preferences. Staff were trained in consent, and daily notes confirmed this was applied in practice. Care plans were mostly detailed and person-centred, though more information was needed for people who had recently moved in to the service. A new process has been introduced to address this.
Staff interactions clearly improved people’ outcomes, with audits showing close monitoring of health indicators like weight, followed by action planning. Observations revealed caring and responsive behaviour from staff, who knew people well and supported them with warmth and humour. Staff reported feeling supported and valued, and meeting minutes showed they felt able to speak up and contribute ideas. Continuity of care was strong, with staff accompanying people to hospital and good links with the local GP.
Information was accessible in various formats. Staff received training in end-of-life care, and relevant information was documented in care plans. Overall, care was tailored to individual needs, and people were treated with dignity and respect.
