People were supported safely and staff understood and managed risks effectively. The provider had a positive learning culture where people could raise concerns, and managers investigated incidents thoroughly. Facilities and equipment met people’s needs, were clean and well maintained, and any risks were mitigated. Staff were supported through training, regular supervision and appraisals. However, we identified shortfalls in the management of medicines, which placed people at risk of harm. We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.
People were involved in the assessments of their needs and had enough to eat and drink to maintain good health. Staff followed best-practice guidance and worked with all agencies involved in people’s care to achieve the best outcomes. They ensured people understood their care and could give informed consent. Staff involved those important to people and made decisions in their best interests when they lacked capacity.
Staff protected people’s privacy and dignity, treated them as individuals, and supported their preferences. Staff responded promptly to people’s needs, and the provider supported staff wellbeing.
People received care tailored to their individual needs. Staff provided information in ways people could understand. People knew how to give feedback and were confident the provider would take it seriously and act on it. People received fair and equal care and support.
There was an open and inclusive culture. Leaders were visible, knowledgeable and supportive, helping staff develop in their roles. Staff felt comfortable speaking up and sharing their views, and they understood their roles and responsibilities. The service worked collaboratively with other agencies and promoted a culture of continuous improvement. However, quality assurance processes required improvement in some areas.
We assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed autistic people and people with a learning disability respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted. We found the service provided care and support in line with this guidance.
