What inspectors found
From the Care Quality Commission's assessment published 6 August 2024 (assessment visit 17 April 2024). Quoted under the Open Government Licence.
We carried out this assessment between 30 April and 23 May 2024. We completed inspection site visits on 30 April, 1 and 10 May 2024. We looked at the following quality statements as part of the assessment, supporting people to manage risks, safe environments and learning culture. This assessment was prompted after a review of recent statutory notifications submitted by the provider. We wanted to gain assurances for how the provider assessed and managed risks related to people’s safety and the care home environment. Ashwood Rest Home is a care home that provides accommodation and personal care for up to 39 people. At the time of our assessment there were 29 people living at the service, some of whom were living with dementia. The service specialises in providing care for adults over 65 years of age. In this assessment we found that the provider was very responsive to issues raised about window restrictors and robustness of risk assessments around the stairs. They took immediate action to ensure all window restrictors were in line with requirements. This helped to improve safety by reducing the risk of people falling from a height. The provider’s risk assessments around the use of stairs needed development to ensure they reflected all actions considered and taken to reduce the risks identified. The registered manager made changes to risk assessments to improve their detail and robustness. There were safe policies and procedures in place to maintain other aspects of the safety of the service, including risks related to fire and water safety. Risk assessments around people’s health and medical conditions were detailed and regularly reviewed. Staff understood the support people needed and were able to follow guidance set out in care plans. The registered manager promoted a positive and pro-active learning culture within the service The registered manager was developing systems to analyse accidents and incidents to promote learning.

Good
During this assessment we looked at 3 quality statements in the key question of safe. The overall rating for this key question combines scoring from quality statements we looked at during this assessment and quality statements scores in line with findings from our last inspection, where the service was rated good. We found that not all window restrictors were in line with requirements set out by the Health and Safety Executive’s guidance. The provider took immediate action in response and by the end of day 3 of the assessment site visit, work had been completed to ensure all window restrictors met requirements. Policies and procedures were in place to reduce risks related to fire, water and equipment. Effective risk assessments were in place for people’s health and medical conditions. However, risk assessments around the use of the stairs did not contain sufficient detail to reflect that all risk factors had been assessed or considered. The registered manager took immediate action to update risk assessments to ensure they were robust working documents which helped to minimise risks. The registered manager was developing processes around investigating and reflecting on incidents to look for trends, causes and ways to reduce risk of recurrence. These processes were still in development and the registered manager needed time to ensure these systems were working effectively.
