At our last assessment the provider was previously in breach of the regulations relating to safe care and treatment and good governance. At this assessment, we found sufficient improvements had been made and the provider was no longer in breach of these regulations.
People living at St Joseph's Nursing Home received care and support from staff who knew them well and worked to promote their independence, dignity and wellbeing. Staff spoke positively about the support they received from leaders and described a culture where learning, teamwork and open communication were encouraged. People and relatives also provided positive feedback about the care provided and felt involved in decisions about their support.
People were supported by staff who understood their needs and risks. Care plans and risk assessments provided guidance on how to manage identified risks while promoting choice and independence. Staff worked closely with external health and social care professionals to ensure people received appropriate support when their needs changed.
Leaders had also responded to concerns relating to electronic monitoring systems by implementing paper-based processes to strengthen oversight of medicines administration and repositioning records. Although some environmental improvements were still required, leaders had recognised these issues, taken action to address them and had plans in place to complete outstanding works.
Leaders demonstrated a good understanding of the service and had established governance systems to support oversight, quality monitoring and continuous improvement. The registered manager described a daily governance process involving the management team, supported by audits, spot checks, walkarounds and departmental monitoring. Staff described leaders as approachable and supportive, and felt able to raise concerns and contribute ideas to improve care.
Leaders recognised areas where further improvements were needed and demonstrated a commitment to learning and driving sustainable improvements for people living at the service. Overall, governance arrangements supported the delivery of safe care, although some environmental oversight processes required further strengthening to ensure issues were addressed as promptly as possible.
