We found the following examples of good practice.
We observed staff wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at the time of inspection. Staff had space to change into their uniforms upon starting and finishing work, to reduce the risk of cross infection.
The premises were clean, hygienic and well ventilated. Additional cleaning schedules had been introduced since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. For example, door handles and light switches were regularly cleaned throughout the day. Regular audits were carried out to make sure good Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) standards were being maintained.
The service was accessing the government testing scheme which had assisted them to identify an outbreak quickly. The service was working with the local authority IPC team and other health professionals in managing the outbreak.
The registered manager had amended their working pattern to stay at the home for 19 days when an outbreak of COVID-19 occurred to provide support and leadership to staff.
Staff had completed training in infection control, COVID-19 and how to put on and take of their PPE. The home did not admit visitors unless it was for the provision of essential healthcare to residents that could not be provided effectively by telephone or video calls.
