We assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted.
The registered manager set a strong example, fostering a culture where people and staff felt comfortable raising concerns. Incidents were investigated thoroughly, and people were kept safe. While risks were generally well managed, some assessments lacked detail. Facilities met people’s needs but required redecoration and modernisation, with some furniture worn or damaged.
Staffing levels were appropriate, but more specialised training was recommended due to the complexity of some people’s needs. Staff generally handled medicines well, though there were some recording issues. Care planning was person-centred and evidence-based, with good inter-agency collaboration and monitoring of health and nutrition, however some further detail was needed around backgrounds and people’s history. Consent was respected, and best interest decisions were made where necessary.
People were treated with kindness and compassion. Staff protected their privacy and dignity. They treated them as individuals and supported their preferences. People had choice in their care and were encouraged to maintain relationships with family and friends. Staff responded to people in a timely way. The provider supported staff wellbeing.
People were involved in decisions about their care. Staff provided information people could understand. People knew how to give feedback and were confident the provider took it seriously and acted on it. The service was easy to access and worked to eliminate discrimination. People received fair and equal care and treatment. Staff worked to reduce health and care inequalities through training and feedback. People were involved in planning.
Leaders and staff had a shared vision and culture based on listening, learning and trust. The provider was supportive, however required more oversight and innovation to ensure long standing tasks in the home, such as the décor were completed. While governance systems had improved, more oversight and innovation were needed to address persistent issues identified in last inspection. The registered manager received high praise for their positive impact.
