During this inspection we spoke with people who lived at the service, their relatives, staff, the registered manager and a nominated individual (Nominated individual is someone appointed as the main point of contact with the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Their key responsibility is to supervise the management of the regulated activities provided by the organisation. We also sought feedback from external healthcare professionals, and we looked at care plans, medicines records, recruitment files and quality assurance records.

Weavers Care Home provides a caring and supportive approach where people feel safe and respected. The service demonstrated strengths in promoting person-centred care, maintaining positive relationships with people and their relatives, and fostering a culture of openness and learning. Staff were described by relatives as kind, compassionate and attentive, and relatives consistently expressed confidence in the quality of care.

People’s health and wellbeing were supported through effective assessment, care planning and collaboration with health professionals. Feedback from relatives and visiting professionals was highly positive about the responsiveness of staff and the quality of communication. Staff worked well as a team and had access to training and supervision to develop and maintain their skills. Activities were varied and meaningful, helping people stay engaged and connected to their past and people who were important to them.

We completed a short observational framework tool to help us assess through observation how people were supported by staff and that there were enough to staff to meet people’s physical and emotional needs. During our observation we saw warm, meaningful interactions between people and staff. This included a person who was singing with staff. Another person was sitting, occasionally smiling at both people and staff. Staff served people and visitors a choice of hot and cold drinks and biscuits.

However, we identified areas which needed to be developed further to ensure safety and consistency. Environmental checks were not always robust, as we found hazards such as unsecured wardrobes and uncovered radiators which presented unnecessary risks to people. While these were addressed promptly, systems needed be strengthened to identify such concerns and prevent recurrence. Further development of medicines management is required. This will help to ensure systems are in place to ensure people consistently received their medicines safely.

Leadership was visible and approachable, however, we found governance systems in place to monitor quality of the service were not always effective. Audits were completed regularly but some concerns we found had not been identified or promptly progressed through the provider’s routine checks. The provider had plans for further development for all staff including leaders. This was linked to implementing a further quality assurance system to enhance governance at the home, which should support ongoing improvement.
