Dean Wood Care Home has three floors, each of which has separate adapted facilities. The ground floor provided care for people living with dementia. The first floor provided care for people with nursing care needs and the second floor was dedicated to residential care.

We spoke with 4 people and 2 relatives about their experience of the care provided. We used the Short Observational Framework for Inspection (SOFI). SOFI is a way of observing care to help us understand the experience of people who could not talk with us. We spoke with the registered manager, the business manager, head of care, administrator/receptionist, 2 nurses, 8 members of staff and 1 ancillary staff. We also spoke with two visiting professionals.

We carried out our on-site assessment on 11 December 2023. Off site assessment activity started on 12 December 2023 and ended on 11 January 2024. We looked at 6 quality statements; Safeguarding; Involving people to manage risks; Safe and effective staffing; Independence, choice and control; Equity in experiences and outcomes and Governance, management and sustainability.

  1. Safe

    Good

The provider had processes in place to ensure people were protected from risk of harm and abuse. Staff knew the potential risks to people and how to report concerns. The provider followed recruitment policies and procedures ensuring staff were recruited safely. There were suitable numbers of trained staff to keep people safe.

  2. Caring

    Good

The provider had policies and systems that staff followed to ensure people were supported to have choice and control of their lives. Care plans were clear and provided staff with sufficient guidance on peoples wants, wishes and needs.

  3. Responsive

    Good

On the whole people received personalised care that met their needs. On the nursing and residential floors this was the case. However, on the floor that specialised in caring for people living with dementia, we saw areas of practice that need improvement.

People living with dementia were safe and well cared for. However, some people could have received better outcomes and personalised care if further work had been undertaken to understand their needs. This would have provided a greater equity in experiences and outcomes for people.

  4. Well-led

    Good

At our last inspection, we found areas of practice that needed improvement in respect to systems of audits and governance being embedded and driving improvement. At this assessment, improvements had been made. The management of the service ensured that effective systems of quality monitoring were routinely carried out, and to ensure a good level of care.
