What inspectors found
From the Care Quality Commission's assessment published 6 November 2026 (assessment visit 16 March 2026). Quoted under the Open Government Licence.
The unannounced inspection of acute medical care services (including older people's care) at Nottingham City Hospital took place on 12 and13 May 2026, with a follow up unannounced visit on the 27 May 2026. This was a comprehensive inspection, carried out because the service’s previous rating was aged. We found the service had taken actions to address areas for improvement identified in our 2019 inspection. This inspection was required to ensure the current quality and safety of the service were accurately reflected.

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust was formed in 2006. It was formed through the merger of the Queen's Medical Centre NHS Trust and Nottingham City Hospital. The Trust provides acute healthcare services for over 1,000,000 people a year across Nottinghamshire and surrounding areas and is a major specialist centre. The trust provides general and acute hospital care across three hospital sites: Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham City Hospital, and Ropewalk House. The Trust also provides community services.
We rated the service as good because staff continued to provide care that was safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. Patients received support from staff who understood their needs and delivered care in a consistent, compassionate and person‑centred way. Staff treated people with kindness, respected their dignity, and feedback from those using the service was generally positive about the quality of care provided. Systems and processes were in place to help protect patients from harm; minimise risks and staff we spoke with understood their safeguarding responsibilities. Care was delivered in line with good practice guidance, and people were supported to maintain their health and wellbeing.
Staff had the skills and knowledge required, and there was evidence of effective multi-disciplinary teamwork and communication to promote and support positive patient outcomes. People’s care plans were up to date and reflected their current needs, choices and risks which enabled staff to provide coordinated and personalised support. Ward leaders promoted an open and inclusive culture and maintained oversight of the service through regular checks and audits. Staff felt supported, valued and able to raise issues within the local leadership team, there was a consistent approach towards recognising and celebrating staff success.
However, staff told us that senior leadership was not always visible within the service, strategies for meeting future needs were not always clear and that the Trust's recruitment processes impacted on the ability to provide all its services in a timely way.
