What inspectors found

From the Care Quality Commission's assessment published 29 January 2025 (assessment visit 12 April 2024). Quoted under the Open Government Licence.

Dates of assessment activity: 03 July to 06 July 2024. This assessment was carried out in response to information we had received about the service. Priscilla Wakefield House is a nursing home providing accommodation, personal care and treatment to up to 117 people. The service provides support to people, some of whom live with physical disabilities and mental health conditions. During the assessment we spoke with 15 staff in total including the registered manager, the head of care, 1 activity coordinator, 1 receptionist, 4 registered nurses, 1 Team leader, 1 chef kitchen assistant and 5 healthcare assistants. People were protected from the risks of abuse. The provider had policies and procedures in place for safeguarding to protect people from the risk of abuse. Staff were recruited safely and had the necessary safety checks in place before starting work. Staff received an induction when they first started working at the service and training relevant to their roles. Suitable staffing arrangements were in place. People gave positive feedback about the staff who supported them and the management team. People were encouraged by staff to remain as independent as possible and were given appropriate support to do so. Person-centred care was promoted through staff’s practice even though we found some care plans were generic and not person-centred and did not always include details regarding people’s specific health conditions. Staff knew people’s support needs and preferences well. Measures were implemented to prevent and control infections. Medications were administered and managed safely, even though we found the medication care planning was not always as person-centred as required. The service worked in partnership with other professionals to meet people’s needs. Referrals were made to other medical services when required. Complaints had been responded to. Leadership was strong with a focus on community involvement and on research and innovation.

  1. Safe

    Good

At our last inspection in May 2022 we did not change the rating of good in this area. We found the rating remained good during this assessment.

Risks to people's safety and well-being had been evaluated, and comprehensive plans were put in place to mitigate these risks. The environment was safe for people. The service followed thorough systems and processes to respond to accidents, incidents, complaints, and safeguarding issues. Staff collaborated and partnered with other agencies to ensure people's safety. Measures were implemented to prevent and control infections. Medications were managed safely, however we noted some areas that need to improve such as the care planing details, the handling of homely remedies and the auditing system. Effective systems were in place to ensure safe staff recruitment, and there were sufficient, well-trained staff on duty to provide safe care for people who lived in the service.

  2. Effective

    Good

At our last inspection in May 2022 we did not look at the question of effective. We found the rating for effective was good during this assessment.

Informative records were in place reflecting people’s needs and the risks they faced were assessed. However, we found some gaps in the records documenting certain aspects of the care provided such as systems to monitor scheduled appointments. The service informed people about their right to consent to care and followed clear policies and procedures with respect to people’s Mental Capacity assessment.

At our last inspection in May 2022, we did not look at the question of caring. We found the rating for caring was good during this assessment.

People were treated with kindness and compassion and staff were respectful of people’s individual wishes, preferences and needs. A person told us: “I feel listened to and very supported” and another person said: “the staff are great, and they are like my friends. They really know what they are doing”. Staff felt supported within their team and spoke positively of the atmosphere of the service.

  4. Responsive

    Good

At our last inspection in May 2022, we did not change the rating of good in this area. We found the rating remained good during this assessment.

The service was responsive to people’s needs and acted in a timely manner. People’s and their relatives views were taken into account, however we found the service needed to adopt a more person-centred approach to recording people’s care plans.

  5. Well-led

    Good
