The service provided a safe and comfortable environment for people. Some improvement was needed to make sure staffing was organised effectively to enable people to have the opportunity to engage in activities that were meaningful to them. Staff had worked well to build relationships with community groups so people could benefit from contact with, for example, church groups and choirs.
Staff respected people’s individuality and although kind and caring in their approach, sometimes did not recognise when people’s dignity was compromised. Not all staff demonstrated competence in meeting people’s moving and handling needs.
Some improvements were needed to demonstrate that people, and where appropriate, their families were fully involved in the assessment and review of their needs and that care plans accurately reflected these needs. Processes to identify and manage risks to people’s health and safety required some improvement.
We found governance systems had not always been effective in identifying issues in relation to matters including care documentation, management of risk and promoting people’s dignity. We were assured throughout the assessment that the management team were addressing this. We identified a breach of regulation in relation to safe management of medicines.
We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the breach relating to the safe management of medicines.
