We assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted.

We found the service was meeting this guidance, which meant people were supported in a way which maximised their dignity, choice and access to their local community.

Newborough Close is an adapted bungalow meeting the needs of people living there and is well presented offering a modern, clean and welcoming environment.

Trained staff delivered care and support in a patient, gentle person-centred way to the older people living there. Staff followed the provider’s policies and procedures, ensuring people received their medicines as prescribed and in a safe way. Staff knew people well and how to keep them safe, following risk management plans. They understood their responsibilities to protect people from abuse and potential harm.

Effective communication took place between the staff and management team and meant any changes in people’s needs were addressed in a timely way.

Staff felt comfortable with lone-working arrangements and the support systems in place around this. Staffing levels met people’s needs and were adjusted whenever needed, such as to support planned days out, or to cover healthcare appointments.

The provider followed the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) and staff had an awareness of what this meant in their job role. Staff understood the importance of gaining people’s consent when supporting them with, for example, personal care and maintained people’s privacy and dignity. No one living at the home currently had any restrictions placed upon their liberty under the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS).

The provider ensured safe staff recruitment took place and that staff were supported in their job role.

The provider had systems and processes in place to ensure standards at the home met the regulations and a good service was provided to people. Feedback from people, relatives and staff was encouraged and used to develop and maintain a good service.
