What inspectors found

From the Care Quality Commission's assessment published 2 December 2024 (assessment visit 8 October 2024). Quoted under the Open Government Licence.

The Beeches Retirement Hotel is a residential care home providing accommodation, support and personal care to up to 20 people. There were 19 people living at the home at the time of our in-site assessment on 15 October 2024. Our assessment was focussed looking at our safe and well-led key questions. There had been a recent change of provider for the service and a new registered manager had been in post for 4 months at the time of our assessment. The registered manager had created a service improvement plan as there were several areas that required review, development and embedding at the service. These included capturing lessons learned from accidents and incidents, auditing processes, capturing feedback and supporting staff with training, supervision and team meetings. During our assessment we spoke with 7 people, 4 relatives, 2 professionals and 9 staff. Staff included the registered manager, deputy manager, maintenance and kitchen staff and care staff. We looked at 5 care plans and documents relating to auditing, accidents and incidents and quality assurance. We looked at 4 staff files.

  1. Safe

    Good

Staff had been recruited safely however refresher training needed to be implemented and support for staff with team meetings and supervisions needed embedding. A way of sharing lessons learned with staff following accidents and incidents needed to be implemented. The service was clean and staff wore personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriately. There were some shortages however in supplies. Staff knew people well and were aware of individual risks. People were living safely at the service supported by staff who knew how to identify risks and were confident to raise concerns when needed. People were supported to be as independent as possible within the limits of safety. Medicines were stored, administered, recorded and disposed of safely.

  2. Well-led

    No rating

The service has had a change in owner and registered manager in the past few months. There had been a turnover of staff and this had taken time to settle. Everyone spoke well of the new management team who shared a common aim of improvement which was clearly documented in the service improvement plan. There remained however several areas where improvement was needed and new processes need time to embed in the service culture. For example, auditing processes needed updating and reviewing to include training, care plans and risk assessments. A schedule of staff supervisions and team meetings and a means of securing regular feedback from people, relatives and staff needed to implemented. A means of learning lessons when things went wrong needed to be developed and embedded as a usual way of working.
