Camden Care Home was undergoing major refurbishment at the time of inspection. The 8 people living there were limited to the areas not yet under construction. They were due to move into the newly refurbished “Phase 1” section within days. However, following our site visit, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue raised concerns about inadequate fire evacuation measures. Overall, there was no safe, compliant means of evacuating the first floor in the event of a fire. This resulted in the move being delayed until these safety issues were resolved. Feedback from relatives indicated the refurbishment was taking longer than expected, and although several completion dates had been provided, these had passed without the work being finished. Some relatives felt this was having a detrimental impact on their loved ones well being as they were living in a much smaller space. We fed this back to the provider who advised they would organise a meeting for people and their relatives to attend.

We assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed autistic people and people with a learning disability respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted. At the time of the assessment, the service was not supporting any autistic people or people with a learning disability, but the provider had regard to ‘Right support, right care, right culture’. After the visit, the assessment was completed off-site, where we reviewed documentation and obtained additional feedback from staff and relatives. Staff were consistently described as kind, caring, and compassionate. People and their relatives were supported to be involved in decisions about their care. They received support from staff who knew them well, were confident in their roles, and demonstrated the skills needed to provide safe and effective care.

People were supported to be as independent as possible and their dignity and privacy were respected. Care plans and risk assessments reflected people’s needs and helped staff manage risks safely. Staff were trained and well supported by managers, which helped ensure safe and effective care.
