Aurem Care (Glebe House) is a care home providing accommodation, nursing and personal care to people with complex health conditions as well as to people living with dementia. At the time of our visit 32 people were at the service.

The internal environment of Glebe House required improvement. Although the home was clean, the furnishings and décor looked tired and in need of refreshing and updating. Following the inspection, we were provided with an action plan for refurbishment works; however, this included limited detail about timescales or expected completion dates. This meant there was no clear assurance about when improvements to the environment would be completed, and people may continue living in surroundings that did not fully reflect the quality of care and support they were receiving.

Although we had no general concerns about the cleanliness within the premises, we did observe staff not always following good infection control practices. We also observed some task-orientated care taking place by some staff, despite staff generally being kind and caring and providing people with empathetic and compassionate care.

Staff recognised the need to assist people with accessing external support, however, we found that better links with the local area were needed to give people more opportunity to go out and participate in activities of their choosing.

People were kept safe whilst living at Glebe House as staff had assessed their needs using nationally recognised tools and assessments and, resulting from this, had developed risk assessments and care plan which recognised people as an individual with specific care needs.

Staff worked well within the team as well as with external health professionals. This helped ensure people received appropriate care and care that promoted their wellbeing.

Staff were recruited through robust practices and new staff undertook a training and induction programme to help ensure they were competent and confident in the role.

The service was managed by an able registered manager who had good management oversight, supported her team and was well thought of by people and family members.
