This inspection was completed because we had not inspected this service since 19 February 2020. This inspection covered all 5 key questions of safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.
Staff had a good understanding of their safeguarding responsibilities and processes ensured there were opportunities to learn from incidents. Staff were recruited safely and received training relevant to their role; however, they did not have their competency consistently checked. Medicines were stored, managed and administered safely, in accordance with best practice guidance. However, gaps in as required medicine (PRN) protocols meant further improvement was needed. Some risk assessments required further detail to ensure people’s safety.
People’s needs were assessed and regularly reviewed and staff referred people to professionals when needed. Activities that promoted wellbeing were encouraged and people were able to make their own decisions. However, staff lacked clear instructions on safe eating and drinking support and more understanding was needed around the Mental Capacity Act (MCA).
Staff treated people with kindness and care was personalised to individual preferences, routines and interests. The manager valued and supported staff through gestures of appreciation and provided opportunities for training and qualifications, although staff reported a lack of regular supervisions.
Quality monitoring systems were in place but needed improvement to ensure effective oversight. The registered manager and trustees were responsive to our findings and action was taken to make improvements where needed.
