During this assessment we spoke with people who lived at the service, their relatives, staff, the registered manager and sought feedback from other healthcare professionals. We looked at care plans, recruitment files and quality assurance records.

The provider’s vision, values and philosophy were focussed on 'making every day a day well lived' for people. Staff were committed to the provider’s vision and values and able to describe how they implemented them into their everyday practice. Staff told us managers and staff were visible and approachable and the teamwork they shared with colleagues enabled them to provide good standards of care. The provider promoted equality and diversity and worked in partnership with people, relatives, staff and other agencies to ensure people’s needs were met. The wellbeing of staff was important to the provider and processes had been introduced to support their physical, mental and financial wellbeing. The provider had an evidence based and outcome focussed approach to improving care at Dewar Close and in the wider provider group.

Risks to people’s health and wellbeing had been identified and actions implemented to mitigate those risks. Staff understood their role in keeping people safe and reporting any concerns, accidents and incidents. The environment was well-maintained, and staff followed good infection control practices. Processes ensured people received their prescribed medicines and guidelines for their safe administration were followed. Staff received an induction when they started working at the service and their knowledge was refreshed with regular training. Staff were encouraged to undertake further qualifications to support their progression and development.

Staff encouraged people to maintain their health and referred them to other health and social care professionals when a need was identified. Information was shared appropriately to ensure people received continuity of care as they moved between services. The registered manager ensured people had positive outcomes and advocated for people to ensure they had equitable access to other services. However, some improvements were required to ensure consistency in the standard of monitoring records and to evidence they were always in line with current evidence-based standards.
