The inspection was carried out to follow up on the previous inspection where the rating was requires improvement with 2 breaches of regulation in relation to people’s safe care and treatment and the provider’s governance. We found the provider had made improvements and were no longer in breach of the regulations.
This was a focused inspection which meant we assessed the key questions safe, effective and well-led only.

We found some minor areas for improvement. Although these had no impact on people’s health and care as there was a permanent staff team who knew people well, there was a potential people would not receive the same level of good care if new staff or agency staff were on shift. These included the accuracy and updating of people’s records, medicines and oversight of the quality and accuracy of records .

People were kept safe from harm by detailed guidance for staff around their individual risks. Safeguarding processes were in place and adhered to. The service was clean, odour free and the premises were pleasant and well maintained. There were enough nursing and care staff to provide the care people needed and had been assessed for. Staff had received training and supervision to develop and maintain their skills to provide safe and responsive care. Medicines were generally managed well. Some minor concerns were rectified during the inspection visits or shortly after. Safe recruitment processes were in place to make sure new staff were suitable to provide care to people.
People had an assessment before moving into the service which led to the development of care plans and risk assessments. People received the healthcare they required in a timely way and were referred to specialists when needed. There was a good understanding of the Mental Capacity Act, people’s rights in relation to consent were generally maintained and upheld, although some documents did not always accurately reflect people’s ability to consent.

Staff said they were well supported and spoke highly of the registered manager and the management team and felt able to approach them if they had concerns. Processes were in place so people could speak up if they had a complaint. Complaints were investigated and responded to. Meetings were held with people, relatives and staff so they could share their views and be updated.
