This assessment commenced on 16 January 2024 and was completed on 25 March 2024. An Expert by Experience made phone calls to people’s relatives on 29 January 2024. An Expert by Experience is a person who has personal experience of using or caring for someone who uses this type of care service.

In the assessment, we looked at 5 quality statements; Safeguarding; Involving people to manage risks; Safe and effective staffing; Independence, choice and control and equity in experiences and outcomes.

  1. Safe

    Good

Relatives told us they felt people were safe at Edgemont View, and they were encouraged to understand risks that may affect them. Each person’s mental capacity had been assessed, and their decisions were respected whilst managing risks in relation to their care and treatment.

Staff received the appropriate training in relation to safeguarding. The staff reported any concerns to the registered manager. They took the appropriate action when concerns or incidents were reported. This included referrals to the local authority safeguarding team. Staff were competent to safely support people with moving people and managing day to day clinical needs.

Risks to people had been appropriately recorded. Clear guidance was in place for the staff to follow. People’s care plans and risk assessments were regularly reviewed.

There were appropriate staffing levels and skill mix to make sure people received consistently safe, good quality care that was person centred. The registered manager monitored staffing levels and altered these as and when people’s needs changed. Safe recruitment processes were in place to ensure staff were suitable to work at the service.

  2. Caring

    Good

Staff were kind and caring and people and relatives were happy with the support they received. We were told there were good relationships between people and staff, who were consistently patient and caring when supporting people. There were a range of activities available for people to engage in. There were no restrictions on visitors; and people received visits from friends and family.

People were actively encouraged to remain as independent as possible. Activities were centred around people’s needs, likes and dislikes.

Staff were able to discuss examples around how they provided dignified care for people. People were supported with their health needs and there were processes in place within people’s records to ensure all planned care was assessed and reviewed in line with people’s wishes.

  3. Responsive

    Good

People were supported to give feedback and understand their rights. They felt staff listened to them and made changes where possible or necessary. Relatives felt able to contact members of the management team or other staff if they had concerns or problems.

Staff looked for ways to address the barriers people might face to improve people’s care and achieve equity. Staff told us they were committed to providing high quality care, which met people’s individual needs. There was an awareness of equality and human rights and legal requirements throughout the organisation.

Staff were aware of people’s protected characteristics. They knew how to tailor the support and adjust depending on people’s individual needs.
