Claremont Care Home is a care home providing care to older adults, younger adults and people living with dementia. People in care homes receive accommodation and nursing or personal care as single package under one contractual agreement. The Care Quality Commission regulates both the premises, and the care provided, and both were looked at during this inspection. At the time of inspection there was 30 people living at the service.
The service overall was safe, with effective systems in place to identify, manage and reduce risks to people.
There were minor shortfalls in medicines management, including as and when required medication (PRN) guidance, documentation and storage practices.
Overall governance systems were established and broadly effective. However, on inspection we identified some areas where further strengthening was required including addressing gaps in some mandatory training and improvements to the environment. These areas were either already being addressed or were highlighted to the registered manager to support ongoing improvement and strengthen governance arrangements.
The provider demonstrated a positive and open culture of safety. Incidents, accidents and falls were appropriately reported, reviewed and analysed, with learning used to improve practice. Risk assessments, care plans and monitoring arrangements were regularly updated in response to people’s changing needs and were supported by professional input.
Safeguarding systems were effective, and staff understood how to recognise and escalate concerns. The service worked in line with the principles of the Mental Capacity Act, and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards were appropriately applied.
Staffing was planned using dependency tools, and recruitment practices were robust. Appropriate pre‑employment checks were completed before staff started work, including references and employment checks, ensuring staff were suitable to work with people using the service.
Staff received induction, training and supervision to support safe care delivery. On the day of inspection, there were sufficient staff on duty to meet people’s needs safely.
Infection prevention and control arrangements were effective, and cleanliness standards were maintained.
