What inspectors found
From the Care Quality Commission's assessment published 20 February 2025 (assessment visit 20 August 2024). Quoted under the Open Government Licence.
Keneydon House provides accommodation for up to 21 older people, some of whom are living with dementia. At the time of the inspection there were 19 people living at the service. The service is in one adapted building. People shared communal areas such as lounges, dining room and a garden. The site visit on 14 August 2024 was undertaken by an assessor and a regulatory coordinator. The site visit on 25 September 2024 was undertaken by 1 assessor. An expert by experience made telephone calls to people’s relatives on 19 August 2024. An Expert by Experience is a person who has personal experience of using or caring for someone who uses this type of care service. Staff calls were made during the week commencing 26 August 2024. The assessment was prompted by information we held about the service. We carried out a full assessment. We found that some risk assessments lacked information. The provider needs to ensure that information is fully documented during the recruitment process. Some areas of the service were in need of re-decoration. Medicines were well managed. Our observations showed that people were treated with kindness and their privacy and dignity was protected.

Safe
Good
People told us they felt safe. Staff had completed safeguarding training, policies and procedures were available and staff we spoke with told us how they would report to the manager if they had any concerns around safeguarding. However, we found that 2 incidents had not been reported to safeguarding. Some risks that had been identified lacked detailed information on how to reduce and manage the risk. Some areas of the home were in need of redecoration. Recruitment processes needed to be improved to ensure all necessary information had been reviewed before a decision to employ was made.
-
Effective
Good
Systems and processes were in place to ensure people’s needs were assessed. People and the relatives we spoke with told us that they had visited the service before they moved in and were involved in the discussion about the care needs that would be required. Staff knew people well and delivered care in line with their needs, however improvements were required to the documentation and review of this.
-
Caring
Good
Staff were observed to have positive interactions with people and spoke about them in a kind and respectful way. People’s individual needs and preferences were well understood by the staff we spoke with during the visit. Staff had guidance to respond to people’s immediate care needs, to reduce the risk of avoidable distress, pain, or discomfort.
-
Responsive
Good
Care records and daily notes were in the process of being update as they required further information to ensure they were meeting people’s needs in a consistent way. People were offered meaningful activities or engagement. A complaints procedure was available. Most people and relatives we spoke with knew how to make a complaint. People’s end of life decisions had been recorded.

Well-led
Good
The provider had governance and assurance systems in place although some of these required improvements. These included audits and checks on the safety and quality of the service. There had been changes in management and the home manager in post was to begin the process of registering with CQC. The provider and manager were keen to make changes to ensure they promoted a positive culture of support, learning and development. The management were responsive to issues raised during this assessment. The manager needs to ensure they are clear about which incidents to report as 2 incidents had not been reported to safeguarding. They also need to ensure that information is followed up i.e., blood test. Recruitment processes require improving to ensure information is followed up and recorded. Management and staff worked in partnership with the local authority and health professionals to share learning and help improve the quality of people’s experiences. Positive feedback was received from health professionals and the local authority about the management and staff approach to collaborative working to improve the quality of care provided.
