What inspectors found

From the Care Quality Commission's assessment published 7 March 2025 (assessment visit 2 May 2024). Quoted under the Open Government Licence.

Date of assessment: 2 May 2024. The Hermitage is a care home which can accommodate up to 24 people. At the time of our site visit, 15 people were living in the service. The service is set across 2 floors and there were a number of communal areas people could use for relaxation and socialising. There was also access to a garden, which looked to be well kept. We conducted this assessment due to receiving information of concern. We assessed 13 quality statements across the Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-led key questions and we have combined the scores for these areas with scores from the previous inspection. At this assessment we found care records did not show people were involved in the planning of their care and lacked information about their individual needs. However, staff appeared to know people well, and people were happy living in the service. Governance processes were not robust and did not identify the issues we found at this assessment. People were supported to maintain their independence and had choice and control over how they lived their lives.

  1. Safe

    Good

We assessed a total of 7 quality statements from this key question. We have combined the scores from these areas with scores based on the key question rating from the previous inspection, which was rated as good.

Safeguarding referrals were made appropriately, but we were not always notified of these. Learning took place after incidents, but reviews could be more thorough. There was a lack of planning in relation to people’s individual risks, but staff were knowledgeable of people’s individual needs. The environment was safe and free from hazards. There were enough staff to meet people’s needs but improvements could be made to ensure there were staff meetings and appraisals. The service was clean throughout and regular cleaning took place. Risk assessments around infection prevention and control required further detail. Whilst people received their medicines as prescribed, practice could be made safer.

  2. Effective

    Good

We assessed 2 quality statements from this key question. We have combined the scores for this area with scores based on the rating from the previous inspection, which was good. Staff supported people to see healthcare professionals where there were changes to their healthcare needs, and staff had a good relationship with healthcare professionals. People told us they were supported in a way which met their individual needs and preferences and felt staff knew them well. However, people’s care records lacked detail and policies and guidance required more regular reviews.

  3. Caring

    Good

We assessed 1 quality statement from this key question. We have combined the scores for this area with scores based on the rating from the previous inspection, which was good. People were supported to have independence, choice and control and staff understood the importance of this. However, people’s care records did not provide enough detail about how to meet their individual needs in relation to their choices and maintaining their independence.

  4. Responsive

    Good

We assessed 2 quality statements from this key question. We have combined the scores for this area with scores based on the rating from the previous inspection, which was good. Staff knew people’s needs well and people experienced good outcomes in relation to their health. Managers understood the importance of getting to know people well, and supported people to live a fulfilling life. However, processes did not adequately reflect people’s views of the knowledge staff had of people’s individual needs.

  5. Well-led

    Good

We assessed 1 quality statement from this key question. We have combined the scores for this area with scores based on the rating from the previous inspection, which was good.
