The provider was in breach of the legal regulation relating to the management of medicines. Issues were identified with stock control, record keeping and administration of some medicines. We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.
Risks to people had been assessed, although records contained some contradictory information, about people’s needs and level of functioning. Guidance for staff also needed to be more specific at times. The provider took action to address these issues during the assessment. People received safe and effective care from staff who knew them and how they wished to be supported. Enough trained staff were deployed to meet needs timely. Accidents, incidents and complaints were managed appropriately and in line with the provider’s policy. The home was clean, equipment was safe to use, and ongoing checks were completed to ensure compliance with regulations.
Assessments were completed prior to admission, to ensure the provider could meet people’s needs. Staff sought people’s consent prior to providing care. Where people lacked capacity to consent, decisions had been made in their best interest. People were happy with the food and drink provided. People with special dietary requirements, such as needing pureed meals, received these in line with guidance. The provider monitored people’s health and referred people to healthcare professionals as required. However, people’s care and treatment was not always effectively monitored, to ensure identified outcomes were being achieved.
People and relatives felt the home was well-led and would recommend it to others. The provider completed a range of audits and governance processes to help monitor and drive improvements. Learning from accidents, incidents and gaps in practice was completed and shared across the staff team. Views and suggestions for improvement were sought via surveys, with feedback on actions shared via a noticeboard. The provider worked closely and collaboratively with a range of health and social care professionals and had also made links with community organisations who visited the home to provide services and activities to people. The provider had guidance for people, relatives and staff on how to speak up and raise concerns, although people had not needed to use these.
