What inspectors found
From the Care Quality Commission's assessment published 5 November 2024 (assessment visit 18 July 2024). Quoted under the Open Government Licence.
Castleford House Nursing Home is a nursing care home registered for 43 people. There were 36 people living at the home at the time of our site visits. The assessment took place between 06 and 07 August 2024. At the inspection in May 2021 the service was rated Outstanding. This was a responsive inspection because of concerns which we received and in line with our Single Assessment Framework, we have inspected 5 Priority Quality Statements to ascertain if the service is still meeting the general expectations of Outstanding and Good. Our current processes do not change ratings unless we have inspected and assessed a certain proportion of Quality Statements. In this inspection we did not inspect enough Quality Statements to change the rating. We found the service was maintaining good standards, and therefore have not changed the rating overall. We spoke to 10 people and three relatives on site as well as 8 staff including nurses, senior care workers, care workers, an activity co-ordinator, the deputy manager, manager and the area manager/nominated individual. All responses were positive. We also observed the care and support provided to people over two days including lunchtimes. We found good outcomes for people living at the service in all the areas we assessed.

Safe
Good
People felt safe and protected from the risk of harm and abuse. Staff knew people well and were able to notice any changes in people’s wellbeing. Systems were in place to keep people safe. Records showed staff had been trained in safeguarding. Staff told us how they would report any concerns and they were confident these would be dealt with appropriately. Care plans and risk assessments were clear and contained guidance on how to minimise restrictions and keep people safe. There were sufficient staffing levels to meet peoples’ needs and staff had been recruited safely. Systems were in place to support staff and make sure they had opportunities to develop their skills and knowledge. Records showed a wide range of training had been completed. Accidents and incidents were reviewed to identify developing trends which might indicate people’s care needs were changing.

Caring
Good
People were treated as individuals. We saw staff respected people’s choices such as where people wanted to spend their time, what they wanted to eat and if they wanted to be involved in activities within the home. We saw staff understood the importance of people making decisions for themselves and this was promoted. The provider and staff understood how important social interaction was for people. A team of lifestyles staff organised various group and individual activities daily. The provider had policies and processes to support people to maintain choice and control in their lives. This included unrestricted visiting from people’s relatives and friends.
-
Responsive

People were treated as individuals and their views sought and listened to. People were asked for their views on how the service was managed and they knew how to raise a complaint if needed.
