An assessment has been undertaken of a service that is used by autistic people or people with a learning disability but is not registered as a specialist service. We have assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted. We found the provider had met all these expectations and always provided support following these guidelines.

Environmental safety had been considered; however, we identified that legionella checks, and related policies required strengthening and further measures were needed to ensure people’s finances were appropriately monitored. While no issues were found, the financial systems in place to check and safeguard monies were not sufficiently robust.

People were safe and involved in assessment of their needs. Staff reviewed assessments taking account of people’s communication, person and health needs. People received their medicines as prescribed by trained and competency assessed staff.

Staff felt supported to give feedback and felt action would be taken following it. The service was clean and homely. People were supported by staff who had received sufficient training, and they were knowledgeable about their needs. People told us they were engaged in meaningful activities and their goals and aspirations were recorded and monitored to ensure they were experiencing a good quality of life.

People’s health needs were met, and appropriate professionals were involved when required. Mental capacity was considered, and individuals were supported to make their own choices wherever possible. Families were involved in people’s care, and individuals were encouraged and supported to maintain meaningful relationships.

The service was well managed by a registered manager who had a clear understanding of the service and its needs. They were open, responsive, and demonstrated a commitment to continually improving the quality of the service. Leaders had a shared vision and leaders were visible.
