At our last inspection, the service was in breach of 2 regulations of the Health and Social Care Act (2014) in relation to staffing levels and deployment and person-centred care as people were not being supported to pursue their interests. At this inspection the service had improved and is no longer in breach of any regulations. The service has improved from requires improvement to good at this inspection, although there are still some areas where the service is still working on improving. Please see the full report for details.

Some risk assessments and care plans relating to how to support people when they were upset were not as detailed as they could be. On our first visit to the service some areas of the environment were not safe. It was sometimes more difficult to see how people were being supported to spend their time and have good experiences and outcomes at the service. The registered manager and staff team acted promptly to address these issues and were already aware of many of them through their own assurance and governance processes.

People were safe being supported by the staff team. Staff were trained and knew how to report safeguarding concerns. Risks to people had been assessed, including in relation to medicines and their specific health and support needs. There were enough trained and competent staff to support people safely. Staff followed good infection prevention and control (IPC) procedures, and the service was clean. Staff supported people to stay healthy and see health professionals if necessary. People were supported in line with the Mental Capacity Act (MCA). People were positive about the staff who supported them, and relatives described staff as kind and caring. Relatives were particularly positive about the support their family members received at the end of their life. People were supported to make choices and be independent if they chose to do this. People were supported in line with their preferences as much as possible. They were given opportunities to be involved in social pastimes both at the service and in the local community. Most aspects of people’s care plans were clear and detailed. The management and staff team were passionate about supporting people. The management team and provider had a good oversight of the service and completed audits to monitor the quality of people’s care. There was a positive culture at the service, people and their relatives were happy with their/ their family members support, and staff enjoyed their job roles.
