At the last inspection we identified a breach of regulation 17 (good governance) due to shortfalls found with medicines, recruitment and fire safety measures. The last rating for this service was requires improvement (published 4 April 2020).

Despite some improvements we have identified continued shortfalls in relation to safety and governance. Medicines were not always stored, managed and administered in line with best practice guidance. Fluid monitoring was inconsistent and eating and drinking care plans were not always updated in line with professional guidance. Not all risks with the environment had been identified.

Governance arrangements were not sufficiently robust. Audits and oversight processes did not effectively identify the shortfalls we found. Although leaders were approachable and staff felt supported, greater oversight was needed to ensure the service consistently met legal requirements. The provider was in breach of the legal regulations relating to safe care and treatment and good governance.

Notwithstanding these concerns we found many examples of good practice in relation to person-centred care, provision of activities and facilities within the home. The provider was also ensuring people’s religious and cultural differences were supported and celebrated. Staff were attentive to people’s needs, supported access to healthcare professionals. The service had strong links to external community groups to enhance people’s wellbeing and social connections. The provider was also very good at supporting staff wellbeing and celebrating equality and diversity.

In instances where CQC has begun a process of regulatory action, we may publish this information on our website after any representations and/or appeals have been concluded, if the action has been taken forward.
