The service had an exceptional culture, one that was focussed totally on the people living in the home. Through the dedication of staff, people received individualised care based on people’s wishes. Activities were meaningful and personalised to people and as such life at David Gresham House was busy, purposeful and fulfilling.

The registered manager fully understood how to create an atmosphere that meant people treated equally and recognised in their own right. They understood the diverse needs of people to ensure care was joined-up, flexible and supported choice and continuity. This included close collaboration with partners and the local community to work seamlessly for people.

Staff helped to make sure people were safe in the service as they had recognised where people’s risks lay and had developed strategies to help reduce the risk of people being harmed, whilst supporting people to retain their independence.

Staff followed good practices within the service, this included medicines, infection control and health and safety. All contributed to ensuring the service was a safe place for people to live.

Staff were recruited through good processes and there were sufficient staff on duty day and night to provide care to people. Staff told us they felt supported and valued and they had the opportunity to access training and also speak with their line manager on a one-to-one basis.

Staff worked closely with external agencies to provide the care people needed and where care did not go as planned, action was taken and lessons learnt to help reduce reoccurrence.

Staff understood their responsibility to keep people free from the risk of abuse. They also recognised the principles of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and ensured consent was sought from people.

Staff said they were treated equally and would have no hesitation in speaking up should they have any concerns and the registered manager encouraged their team to continually learn.

Governance arrangements were robust and the service was regularly checked for its quality.
