What inspectors found

From the Care Quality Commission's assessment published 16 October 2026 (assessment visit 23 June 2026). Quoted under the Open Government Licence.

Date of inspection: 27 August to 2026 – 29 September 2026. The service is a residential care home for up to 14 adults over the age of 65. At the time of inspection there were 13 people living at the home, some of whom were living with dementia. The service moved to a new provider on 2 January 2026. The new provider supports the service on a voluntary basis. Both the owner and the new provider were actively involved in the service and were onsite during our unannounced visit.

The service inherited a rating of good from the previous provider. At this inspection the service maintained a rating of good. The service is a small local business. The staff were predominantly local people who lived close by. Agency staff were not in use, meaning staffing is consistent and they understand people's needs well. The small size of the staff team, the amount of people living there, and the building gave it a homely and family orientated feel. This was appreciated by people. A relative said “I would recommend it; it is like a little family here”.

The registered manager was also the nominated individual. Under CQC regulations, a separate manager registration was not required. Throughout this report, they were referred to as the registered manager. They demonstrated excellent leadership skills and had good oversight of the service and the people it supported. They were also highly regarded by everyone we spoke to as part of the inspection. One person said, “The [registered] manager is fantastic, they sort things out in a flash, I feel they are a friend, that last [medical procedure] was painful and they were on their knees holding my hand, I am so grateful, nothing is too much trouble – everybody respects them.”

However, the provider did not consistently demonstrate effective governance arrangements. Despite there being multiple audits in place, they were not sufficiently robust to enable the registered manager to identify all the issues we found during our inspection such as broken window restrictors, safe storage of medicated creams and food not being correctly labelled, stored and disposed of. Despite this lack of oversight, there was no evidence that people experienced harm or that care was not being delivered in line with people’s assessed needs.

At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has changed to requires Improvement. This meant the management and leadership was inconsistent. Leaders and the culture they created did not always support the delivery of high-quality, person-centred care.
