People received safe, person-centred care from an experienced staff team who knew them well. There were enough staff available to support people safely and meet their individual needs while promoting choice and independence.

Relatives told us their family members benefited from the consistency of staffing at the home. They said the registered manager and staff worked well as a team to ensure people’s needs were met. One relative told us, “The staffing is very consistent; that is what makes it work. I find them a really nice team; they are all really good, all very helpful.” Another relative said, “They are a good team; they work together really well. And the manager is really good. If you have a good manager and a good team, you cannot go wrong.”

Staff kept people safe while enabling positive risk-taking, supporting them to achieve meaningful outcomes and maximise their independence. People lived in a safe, clean environment. Staff carried out regular health and safety checks to ensure the home and equipment were safe and appropriately maintained. People’s medicines were managed safely.

People can only be deprived of their liberty to receive care and treatment with appropriate legal authority. In care homes, this can be done through a procedure called the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS), which is part of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA).

We checked whether the service was working within the principles of the MCA and how they managed DoLS within the service. We found that staff and management worked within the MCA. DoLS authorisations were appropriately applied for and overseen. People were not subject to unlawful or excessive restrictions they had choice, control and freedom over their lives.

Staff and leaders demonstrated a commitment to improving people’s quality of life and achieving positive outcomes. Staff worked effectively with other professionals to ensure people received appropriate care, support and specialist input.

People were actively involved in decisions about their care and support. Staff used a range of communication methods and accessible information to help people express their views, understand information and make choices. People were supported to access activities, holidays, voluntary opportunities, places of worship and their local community in ways that reflected their individual interests and aspirations.

The service was led by an experienced and committed registered manager who promoted a positive, inclusive and values-based culture. Staff said they were well-supported by both the registered manager and provider. Systems were in place to monitor quality and safety, and learning from incidents was used to improve outcomes for people.
