  1. Safe

    Good

People felt safe at the home and looked comfortable and relaxed with staff who supported them. Staff knew how to recognise and report abuse and were confident anything they raised would be acted upon by the management team.

Staff spoken with understood the principle of the Mental Capacity Act 2005. Where people had been assessed to lack the capacity to make specific decisions relevant others were consulted, however, this was not always recorded.

There were sufficient staff who were well supported and had received training to meet people’s needs.

Staff promoted people’s independence. We observed that people were supported to move freely around the home.

When risks had been identified, care plans contained guidance for staff to ensure the risks were managed. However, we found some risk assessments required additional information to ensure all of the control measures in place were recorded.

There were processes in place to learn from any complaints, incidents, or accidents.

  2. Effective

    Good

People received nutrition and hydration in line with their needs. People were given choice and supported by staff who knew their requirements around their eating and drinking needs. However, we received mixed feedback regarding the quality of food. The provider carried out audits on the mealtime experience to identify areas of good practice and areas for improvement.

Improvements were needed in people’s care plans to ensure they contained best practice guidance and additional information to fully detail people’s individual needs.

Staff were aware of people’s healthcare needs and arranged for people to see healthcare professionals as required. There were systems in place to ensure people’s health and wellbeing was monitored.

People were supported to engage in physical activity through the range of activities that were offered at the home.

The service was working within the principles of The Mental capacity Act (2005) (MCA) and if needed, appropriate legal authorisations were in place to deprive a person of their liberty. Care and support plans gave information about people’s ability to consent and anyone who had authority to act on their behalf.

  3. Caring

    Good

People told us their independence and choice was promoted. Throughout the assessment we observed staff offering choices to people.

People told us there were a range of activities on offer that they could attend if they chose. People were able to engage with local community organisations.

  4. Responsive

    Good

The service responded to people’s changing needs. Staff got to know people well and took time supporting them and reviewing and updating their care records to ensure they received safe, consistent care to meet their needs. Staff had received training in equality and diversity.

  5. Well-led

    Good

Staff were aware of their roles and responsibilities and said they were listened to and supported in their roles. Staff spoke highly of the registered manager and deputy manager and said the management team were visible and were easy to approach.

The provider had a range of audits in place which identified areas of improvement.

There were systems in place to support learning and improvement in the home. Staff told us they were informed of any areas where improvements were needed and felt motivated to provide the best possible care for people.
